From Lagos to Nairobi

Our Story

  1. How we met

    We met over lunch at Google's San Francisco office; an employee resource group gathering where a Nigerian and a Kenyan ended up sharing a table. Conversation came easily, friendship followed, and mutual interests in the arts and sciences kept us close.

  2. Falling in love

    Candlelight concerts. Long drives along the California coast. Dives off the coast of Mombasa. Gastronomy in Lagos. With Adetunji in New York, and Sally in San Francisco, third spaces and adventure brought us closer.

  3. The proposal

    On a summer evening above Lake Lucerne, over a picnic with the Alps behind them, Adetunji went down on one knee and Sally said yes. (Add your words here — we've set the scene.)

Tea hills of Tigoni

Head an hour north to the Kiambethu Tea Farm in Tigoni for a guided tea tour, a walk through indigenous forest and a home-cooked lunch. Open Thursday to Sunday — book ahead.

Go to the coast

Trade the highlands for warm sand at Mombasa, Diani or the near-car-free island of Lamu. Get there on the SGR train, or fly with Jambojet, Kenya Airways, Safarilink or Fly540.

Go on safari

The trip of a lifetime is right on the doorstep — a few of Kenya's finest:

Plan a safari through a trusted operator such as Bountiful Safaris, Bonfire Adventures or Rosolo Safaris. Nairobi National Park is wonderfully accessible — you can self-drive the plains, or explore on foot at the main gate via the Nairobi Safari Walk (a boardwalk past a reptile house) and the Animal Orphanage.

Getting around

Skip the guesswork and use Uber, Bolt or Little Cab. Download the app and add a card before you fly (airport Wi-Fi is patchy). Wilson Airport in Langata is handy for safari hops.

SIM & data

Safaricom has the best coverage — even out on safari. Pick up a SIM at the JKIA arrivals desk or any Safaricom shop; bring your passport, as registration is required. Affordable tourist data bundles are easy to load.

Paying your way

Visa & Mastercard work at malls, hotels and most restaurants. Day to day, though, M-Pesa (mobile money on your Safaricom line) is king — set it up if you can, and keep a little cash for smaller spots.

Cash for the road

Hopping on a matatu, bus or boda-boda? Carry small notes — KES 100–200 — since conductors rarely change a 1,000. For comfort and safety we’d still nudge guests toward Uber or Bolt.

Where to eat

Karen & Langata favourites: Talisman, Carnivore (nyama choma), Cultiva and CJ’s at the Waterfront. City-side gems include About Thyme, Inti and Nyama Mama. Book ahead at weekends.

Malls & shopping

Near Karen: The Hub, The Waterfront, Galleria and The Junction. For groceries, Naivas, Carrefour and QuickMart (some open 24 hours) are all over town.

It’s reliable right across Nairobi for driving directions — and it even knows the matatu routes. Lean on it to find your way around.

What time should I arrive?

Please aim to be seated by 11:00 AM. The family introductions begin promptly and are one of the loveliest parts of the day.

Where exactly is the venue, and is there parking?

16 Murishu Road, Karen, Nairobi. Karen is leafy and easy to reach; on-site parking will be available. Use the “Open in Maps” link in the Details section for directions.

What should I wear?

Cultural and elegant. Think earth tones, forest green and gold. Traditional attire — aso-oke, gele, agbada, kitenge, beadwork — is warmly encouraged and always photographs beautifully.

Are children welcome?
